Professor, Dr. of Science at the Institute of Crystallography under the Russian Academy of Sciences, Group Leader and Senior Scientist at European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Hamburg.
In 2003 D.Svergun became Group Leader and Senior Scientist at EMBL. The Svergun group places special emphasis on hybrid methods combining SAXS with X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy to improve the resolution and cross-validate structural models.
Dmitry Svergun together with scientist L. A. Feigin won the world acknowledgment for discovering the new sphere of application for X-rays, when they found out that the structure of material could be defined with the help of SAXS permitting measurements in nanometre range.
They theorized and experimentally proved the possibility of nanometre measurements with SAXS by a series of breakthrough experiments. They developed calculating techniques for solving the inverse problem of small-angle X-ray scattering and managed to define some subtle structures with the help of synchrotron emission.
